Description

The Import Data functionality of Web Data Entry typically uses Statistica spreadsheets during the gathering of sample data.  Can Excel be used to gather sample data and then import into WebData Entry using the Import Data functionality?

Environment

OS:  Windows

Resolution

Yes.  Here is how.  There are three stages to complete for this process. Below is an example.

Stage One:  Export Data Entry Template

1.  In Web Data Entry, click Import Data:

2.  Select the data entry setup for which you want to import data.  In this example, Import Data Example is selected:

3.  Select Download Template:

4.  The file is downloaded in .sta format:

Stage Two:  Save .sta file in .xlxs format and enter sample data

5.  Open the template, that was just downloaded, in Statistica and Save As an .xlsx file.  Select the options

  • Put variable names in first row
  • Export cell formatting

6. Open the Excel file anywhere Excel is installed, add the sample data to the Excel sheet, and save the spreadsheet.

Note:  In the example below, each sample has one label and two characteristic values available though the sample space shows 2 variables and 2 rows per sample.  Thus there is no data allowed in second label for the sample. Adding data incorrectly will cause the import data to fail.  For example, any label entered in Column A: Row 3 (or 5, etc), is incorrect:

Stage Three:  Import .xlxs file into Statistica

7.  Open the Excel spreadsheet in Statistica:

8.  Open as a Spreadsheet (not a Workbook) with the following selected:

9.  Save the file in .sta format

10. Select the Import Data again in Web Data Entry, choose the desired data entry setup.  Then click Choose File, choose the file, and then click Upload.  The file name will appear after it is uploaded:

11.  Select Auto Match, check to be sure the variables match.  Choose any other relevant options and then click Import Data:

Note:  Sample Identification, Parent Sample, Complete sample, and Approve sample will apply to all samples in the spreadsheet.

A message will appear that indicates success or failure along with details at the bottom of the page:
