Converting a diagram to modern mode from classic will enable you to edit the diagram in the web client but prevent you from editing the diagram in the author client.

Resolution
You can disable the convert diagram option to prevent accidental conversion with the following steps:
1, Log in to the web client as an administrator.
2. Go to settings on the left hand menu
3. With home page selected on the left hand side scroll to the bottom of the screen
4. Turn off 'Allow authors to edit diagrams created via the desktop app' under the Classic Diagram Conversion section
