Resolution:
This ocurs because the number of records being returned by LDAP is too large for the LDAP to handle. You need to set up search filters to reduce the number of records retrieved. Search criteria can be edited by using the domain utility - Server settings - LDAP configuration, in the “Search Parameters and Attributes” section. (Also see KB 000015690Defining a subset of corporate LDAP roles/users  to be returned.)
