Resolution:
After saving an .ecs file, click on "Export . . ". When the Export Wizard appears, select XDATA 1.0, and then click Next through the rest of the wizard. The resulting .xsd file can be imported into the Schema definition for the EDI transaction, and it will be imported into your BW project on the next import protocol command in the Designer BusinessConnect connection.
