Description
After an upgrade the appliance fails to boot with the message “Grub loading stage 2” is on the screen. This article provides a work around to allow the appliance to be upgraded again.
Issue/Introduction
This article explains how to recover from “Grub loading stage 2” so that an upgrade can be attempted again.
Environment
Only applicable up to LMI 4.9.x because failsafe was removed as a boot option starting with 5.0.
Resolution
1. Access the appliance via the serial port.
2. Reboot the appliance and interrupt the booting process by pressing a key when the grub boot loader appears.
3. Select “Failsafe” and press enter.
4. Enter root password when prompted.
5. When the boot process has finished type:
grub
6. Enter these commands at the grub> prompt :
grub> root (hd0,0)
grub> setup (hd0)
grub> reboot
This will reset grub to boot from the main root filesystem again (non-failsafe) so that the upgrade can be attempted again.
