This article details scenarios for using the IP address in place of the server name portion of the pointer license file.
Cause:
It has been found that on rare occasions network issues can arise that make name resolution (DNS) problematic. For instance:
Note: Name Resolution is more resilient since if the server IP address does change, the workstations will not license. However, the server name (netbios) name of the server could also change and this would break the licensing system.
The server name portion of the pointer license file can be swapped out for the IP address of the server as long as the IP address of the server is static.
Example:
Original pointer file server line using name resolution
SERVER StatSvr1 0a14ce5656ca 26999
New pointer file server line using IP address
SERVER 192.168.0.100 0a14ce5656ca 26999
The steps to change the pointer license file are as follows:
1. Open the stat.lic, with Notepad, from the Statistica <version> folder on the workstation (typical location is C:\Program Files\StatSoft\Statistica <version#> or C:\Program Files\<install folder>\Statistica <version #>, for 32 bit installs, the parent folder will be Program Files (x86)).
2. Replace the server name with the static ip address of the server
3. Save the stat.lic file. If the stat.lic cannot be saved to the application folder, save it to the desktop location and then copy/paste from the desktop location to the application folder.
