Description

When you upgrade to TIBCO Nimbus V10 from an existing release you should be aware of Modern mode and its implications.

Issue/Introduction

This article will discuss the differences between Modern and Classic mode and give you a step by step guide in making a transition.

Resolution

Please see below which will go into detail about the Tibco Nimbus Version 10 Modern Mode.

We would reccomend testing TIBCO Nimbus V10 before upgrading a production instance in order to ensure that all users are aware of the new functionality and the impact od modern mode on existing maps

If you have any questions or concerns at all please do not hesitate in contacting the TIBCO Nimbus Support Team https://support.tibco.com

One of the main features of version 10 is the ability to create and manage maps and diagrams in the web server. This has many advantages such as being great for mapping workshops due to simplicity and speed and not needing to rely on using back end technologies like Citrix or RDP to access the authoring client.

To make this feature available to older maps created in previous versions of Nimbus or maps that were created in the authoring client we have now added a map mode. The modes both have advantages and disadvantages that I will cover below.

Modern Mode – Modern mode can be seen as the new mode and fully supports web based authoring and all of the features and functionality that this brings with it. All maps created in the web server will be created in Modern Mode.

Classic Mode – If you have used the Nimbus Client before this is what you are used to seeing. Classic mode supports all the features the Nimbus can offer including costing and more. All of the maps that are created in the client in version 10 will be created in Classic mode and any migrated maps from older builds will also be in Classic mode.

Now that we have gone over the very basics of the modes we need to discuss what they offer and more importantly what they don’t offer as this could have huge implications on a map if it is put into the wrong mode.

Modern mode permits view and edit, however, the following functionality will not be available; Background colors and images, BPMN shapes and lines, Costing, Flowchart shapes, Menu function links, Metrics, Signposts, SAP links and certain Business styles will not be applied.

Classic mode supports all functions that the Nimbus authoring client but will not allow you to make any changes in the webserver.

As you can see there are currently some features that Modern mode doesn’t support and you will need to keep this in mind if you are thinking of switching from Classic to Modern mode. As we are helping to import older maps that may have been created a long time ago or is very large we have included a report that will display the features that you will be unable to see after the migration.

If you have read the above information and are happy to go from Classic mode to Modern mode you will need to follow the steps outlined below.

*PLEASE NOTE THAT ONCE YOU HAVE MADE THIS CHANGE IT IIS NOT RECCOMENDED TO THEN EDIT ACTIVITY BOXES WITHIN THE CLASSIC MODE. YOU SHOULD USE THE WEB. IF YOU DO - YOU WILL NOTICE ISSUES WITH ALIGHNMENT OF ACTIVITY BOXES

1. Log into the authoring client and navigate to the map that you wish to change.

2. Click on Map > Map Properties on the toolbar at the top of the client

3. In the Map Properties window that has now appeared select the Advance tab.

4. Click on the large Check compatibility button on the button of the window.

5. You will now see a report window which will show you what will no longer be visible.

6. Close the report once you are happy with the results and tick the mode you wish to change to and hit OK.

This will now have updated the map to the option that you have selected and you should now be able to see the change in the webserver.

You should now edit your maps within the web server rather than the Classic client.  However, we realise that there is some functionality that is not yet available in the web, and therefore you can add / edit these within the classic client.  You should avoid editing the Acitvity boxes or lines within the Classic client, as you will likely see issues with alighnment when viewing them in the web, and this could be an irreversable change to your process map
