Description

This article describes the various Spotfire clients and their capabilities.

Issue/Introduction

This article provides an overview of the various Spotfire clients - Analyst, Cloud Spotfire Analyst, Analyst Portable, Desktop, Consumer and Business Author - and their capabilities.

Resolution

Installed Clients:
  • Spotfire Analyst, formerly called the Spotfire Professional client, a fully-featured client for working with data sources and creating complex analyses is installed on a user's local computer. It provides the most functionality of the clients, intended for users that create new analyses both for themselves and other users. Dashboards developed using Spotfire Analyst can be consumed by web clients (Spotfire Consumer or Business Author) to share with geographically distributed users through a browser-based interactive interface. Connects to a Spotfire Spotfire server, which provides access to server-delivered functionality such as server-side data access (Information Services) and a Library for storing and sharing analysis files, authentication and authorization, software updates, as well as custom extensions. You can select to run the client in offline mode.

  • (TIBCO) Cloud Spotfire Analyst, basically the same as the Analyst but with some slight changes, for use of the hosted Cloud solution.

  • Spotfire Desktop, a version of the Analyst that does not connect to a Spotfire Server. That means there is no requirement for having a Spotfire Server, but it also means that the Spotfire Desktop lacks any of the server-side functionality that is available in the Analyst. Note: From version 14.0, you can run Spotfire Analyst without connecting to a Spotfire Server, by selecting the option 'No server' in the login dialog. The installers for Spotfire Analyst and Spotfire Desktop have been combined into one (Spotfire Analyst). For more information, see the Spotfire 14.0 release notes - https://docs.tibco.com/pub/sfire-analyst/14.0.3/SPOT_sfire-analyst_14.0.3_relnotes.pdf?id=0

Portable Clients:
  • Spotfire Analyst Portable, enables users to test a specific version of Spotfire without having to uninstall an existing Spotfire version. A stand-alone instance of Spotfire Analyst installed client which does not need to be installed but just unzipped where you want to put it. Spotfire Analyst Portable is easy to distribute and deploy: just unzip the TIBCO Spotfire Analyst Portable.zip archive, launch the Spotfire.Dxp.exe, and log in to a TIBCO Spotfire® Server to receive licenses and other configurations. You can use Spotfire Analyst Portable directly from a portable media device, such as a USB flash drive. If you run Spotfire Analyst Portable from a USB flash drive, keep the flash drive in place until you have finished using it and quit Spotfire Analyst Portable
Web-Based Clients
  • Spotfire Consumer, formerly called the Spotfire Web Player client, presents interactive analytic reports through a browser-based interface for geographically dispersed colleagues, customers, and business partners. It extends the reach of analytics to a broad base of business professionals and decision-makers throughout – and beyond – the enterprise, with interactive Spotfire dashboards. The Web Player JavaScript API integrates solutions with Spotfire Consumer. It enables the creation of mashups, which are defined as a combination of two or more web pages. These web pages can combine Spotfire Consumer with your own pages, or with those of other, third-party web applications. A Spotfire Consumer user launches a session via a web browser, by connecting to the URL for a Spotfire Web Player server and logging in.

  • Spotfire Business AuthorA powerful browser-based client within Spotfire Consumer that allows business users to create and configure common business visualizations, add new data, and save and share analyses and visualizations with others. Business Author fulfills a need for users who need a lightweight web-based interface but need additional authoring ability beyond Spotfire Consumer's interactive-dashboard model. Web-based authoring of interactive reports and guided analyses may be done only if one has access to the Spotfire Business Author license.
