Description

Resolution:
RV is agnostic to the type of multicast routing protocol being used.  The one thing to watch, however, is the ability of the routers to perform the routing of multicast packets efficiently.

Bi-directional PIM is our preferred multicast routing protocol as it offers the best scalability.  However, if it is is not possible to implement it, sparse mode PIM should be used.  Most RV multicast deployments use PIM sparse mode (typically sparse-dense mode).

The one difference between RV and other 'multicast applications' is that every single host running RVD will be a source of multicast packets (while most other multicast applications have only a couple of multicast senders and lots of receivers).
Typically sparse mode is preferred to dense mode.
