PortalBuilder 5.1.0 Installation or Deployment fails unexpectedly, and the cause is not readily apparent.

The installation steps are clearly detailed in the TIBCO PortalBuilder® Installation Guide, and if correctly followed, will result in a successful installation of the product.  If not followed, the installation could fail.  It could then be necessary to remove the failed installation and reinstall one or more components.

Cause
=====
The PortalBuilder 5.1 installer interacts with multiple other products during the installation and deployment process.  During this interaction, these other products are expected to be in a specific state for the installer changes to reflect correctly.  If they are not in the correct state (for example, running when they are expected to be shut down), it could result in problems such as changes to various configuration files being ignored because of file locks.

Resolution
==========
Before attempting the installation, carefully check to ensure that all of the necessary prerequisites are met.  Then carefully follow the instructions given in the Installation Guide.
