The “bad magic” error indicates that the message received by the RV(R)D does not have the right magic number to identify it as an RV message. Some of the possible causes could be:
1). Define a neighbor with a wrong connect port number. 2). The size of message you attempt to send is too large (See Solution SOL1-CR2VX5). 3). There is a non-RV based application publishing on whatever UDP port being used for RV traffic. 4). The NIC card on machines involved are not functioning correctly. 5). A switch/router between subnets is not functioning correctly. 6). UDP checksums have been turned off. 7). Turboflooding is enabled if using Cisco routers.
An rvtrace capture from the affected subnet when the problem is seen maybe helpful.
