Resolution: SmartSockets does not take advantage of clustered environments though it can run on a clustered environment. Note: the following setting is required for a SmartSockets client/server to run in this particular environment:
change the following in /etc/nsswitch.conf the line hosts: cluster,files,dns to hosts: files,dns
