EMS 5.x and 6.x are fully backward compatible with EMS 4.x. That is, you can use EMS 4.x (EMS client applications using EMS 4.x client libraries) clients with EMS 5.x/6.x server. Also, you can use EMS 5.x/6.x clients with EMS 4.x server. This is also true for EMS 5.x and 6.x mixed server and client components. It is always recommended to use both server and client libraries from the same/latest EMS version to take advantage of the defect corrections.
