Description

Description:
When performing an upgrade of the TIBCO iProcess Engine (iPE) on Windows, the upgrade will exit abnormally without any error message at the end of copying files. The problem can occur using either variant of the iPE (Oracle or SQL Server) on Microsoft Windows platforms.
Symptoms:
The problem will occur after all information prompts have been completed and the upgrade process starts. The upgrade will start processing correctly until at the end of the file copying stage where the upgrade will exit. The upgrade information displayed indicates the file copy stage has reached 100% just before the abnormal exit. Setting debug prior to the upgrade using "set DEBUG=ALL=255,TIME=ABS,FLAGS=U,FILE=c:\temp\swinstall.log" will show the end of the swinstall.log with the following lines:

150616095309.881369:F004: iniperms: Freeing permsnode x1newmon.msg

150616095309.881492:F004: SW_toggle_perms() : Turning permissions OFF
150616095309.881856:F004: SW_reset_DAT_location() : Resetting DAT location to default
150616095309.882116:F004: SW_reset_init_DAT_location() : Resetting DAT location to default
Cause:
The abnormal exit to the upgrade is caused by a problem in the file copy process. If the iPE had been running and shutdown prior to the upgrade, even though all processes have stopped some internal resource can be left on one or more the iPE processes. This results in the "xcopy" of the executable files being updated failing and the upgrade exiting. The problem has been seen when updating the SPO process.

Issue/Introduction

Upgrading TIBCO iProcess Engine on Windows server fails.

Resolution

1). Update the iPE Microsoft Windows Services and set them to manual starting mode.
2). Reboot the Microsoft Windows server to remove any resource contention on the iPE executable files.
3). Perform the iPE upgrade.
