This could possibly be caused if the Spotfire user license that provides permission for opening Spotfire files has not been enabled for the user's Spotfire group.

Issue/Introduction

Opening TIBCO Spotfire sample files fails with error "The file ... cannot be opened. The file may be damaged or in an unknown format."

Resolution

To open Spotfire analysis .dxp files such as these sample files, Spotfire users and Spotfire user groups need to have at least the "TIBCO Spotfire Enterprise Player > Open file" license enabled for them by a Spotfire Administrator.

  1. Log on to the TIBCO Spotfire Analyst Client with an administrator account
  2. Go to Tools > Administration Manager > Groups and Licenses > Select the user's groups > Licenses tab
  3. Ensure at least "TIBCO Spotfire Enterprise Player > Open file" is enabled

After setting the permissions for the user experiencing the issue, close the TIBCO Spotfire Analyst client and log back in to have the new licenses enabled.

If the issue remains after these changes, a good diagnostic test could be to try other .dxp files - if some files work, but others don't, the non-working file(s) may in fact be damaged. In this case, please open a support case for further assistance.
