When you are working on a complex query, it is useful to know what TDV resources are involved so that you can understand the query’s relationships to other resources and its dependency on other resources.
Studio provides a Data Lineage graph that supports TDV modeling and data visualization capabilities. The Lineage graph in Studio shows the lineage for views, cached views and other resource types. The lineage for a view displays relationships with resources that the view depends on, and resources that depend on the view.
This Data Lineage feature helps you to:
1. Trace where data originates: From data sources through published resources, you can trace which specific data sources contribute to each column.
2. Understand how data is used and/or transformed: You can determine how the data is used or transformed by TDV resources, and which data contributes to the published resources.
3. Discover the impact of change and analyze dependencies: If you delete or rename a resource, the data lineage graph for related resources graphically indicates which dependent resources are impacted.
Note: While Studio provides a detailed lineage, Business Directory(BD) shows only limited lineage information. BD Data Lineage reveals which data sources, tables, and columns were found for a specific resource. This information can help you understand:
1 What will be affected by a proposed change to a column or resource. 2. How a published resource is provided to a consuming application so that you can trace dependencies back to their origins. 3. What resources you might need to have privileges for, because of resource dependencies.
