Description

If you are using NetApp as your NAS solution you may see output similar to the following in the df output on your appliance. The .snapshot entry is caused by using the snapshot feature of NetApp rather than any normal operation of LogLogic LMI. The existence of the .snapshot entry in the df output is expected based on NetApp documentation and allows the NFS client to access historical snapshots of the data hosted on the NetApp device. A .snapshot entry will be listed for each share mounted from the NetApp.

Logapp root:~ 0$ df -Ph

10.10.10.10:/data/vol1/NFS/logs/.snapshot                210T  169T   41T  81% /loglogic/data/archive/mount_2/vol1/.snapshot

Note the above output is generated on an LMI running pre-6.2.1 version.

LMI does not support the snapshot feature being enabled on NetApp and visible on the clients so it should be disabled or hidden.

Issue/Introduction

This article explains why a .snapshot directory mountpoint is visible in the output of the df command on a LogLogic LMI appliance and how to remove it.

Environment

Only LMI appliances with archiving enabled using NetApp storage devices as the NFS server.

Resolution

See 000036898 for steps on how to disable or hide the snapshot feature on NetApp and the effects of not doing so.
