There are two types of TIBCO Streaming releases: Mainstream (MS) and Long-Term Support (LTS). As a Streaming administrator, it is very important that you understand the differences before you choose what type is best suited for you and your developers.
Mainstream (MS) releases are frequent and were introduced to accelerate the availability of new features for customers who want access to the latest improvements and enhancements as quickly as possible. Mainstream users should plan to always upgrade to each new Mainstream version as soon as it is released.
Long-Term Support (LTS) releases are less frequent and are typically supported with Hotfixes and Service Packs for 2 years. This approach provides an option more suited for strictly regulated environments, or for customers who prefer a fully supported environment for an extended period of time, without the need for upgrades.
No matter what type of release, upgrades are incremental and backwards compatible. If you are on the Mainstream track, it doesn’t matter if a new version is LTS or MS. The upgrade process is the same, and you will simply continue your standard process of upgrading to the latest version as it becomes available.
There are two phases of support during a versions lifetime, Full Support and Support Cases Only.
Full Support means that Streaming Engineering will produce Service Packs at intervals and Hotfixes at TIBCO discretion.
Support Cases Only means that Streaming Technical Support will provide best-effort workarounds in response to customer requests, but no new Service Packs or Hotfixes are expected.
The following table highlights the various differences between Mainstream (MS) and Long-Term Support (LTS) versions.
Mainstream (MS) versions | Long-Term Support (LTS) versions | |
---|---|---|
Support (access to open support cases) | MS versions begin with Full Support and continue with Support Cases Only for at least 12 months after the next version (either LTS or MS) becomes available. | LTS versions are Fully Supported for at least 3 years from their General Availability (GA) date followed by 2 years for Support Cases Only. |
Extended support (access to open support cases, past End-of-Support date) | Extended support is not available. | Extended support (Support Cases Only) for an LTS version can be purchased. Note: Hotfixes and Service Packs are not created for versions in extended support. |
Hotfixes and Service Packs | Hotfixes and Service Packs are provided at TIBCO discretion, for the latest MS version only. They may instead be released as part of the next MS/LTS version if that release is imminent. | Hotfixes and Service Packs are provided at TIBCO discretion. |
Upgrades | MS versions can be upgraded to any subsequent MS or LTS version. | LTS versions can be upgraded to any subsequent MS or LTS version. |
