Description
From RedHat EL version 7.6 (LMI 6.3.0) and RedHat EL version 7.8 the way to boot into a single user mode has changed. With that - if Administrators need to reset 'root / toor' password they may need to follow the procedure detailed below.
Issue/Introduction
This article explains the new procedure to boot LMI into a single user mode starting from LMI version 6.3.x
Resolution
To get to the rescue console we need to reboot the appliance and - once you get to the grub menu - press the 'up / down' arrow to block the booting process and then press 'e' to edit the boot menu:
After you get into the boot menu code, look for line starting with 'linux16' and go to the end of that line. At the end of the line add in an space and then parameter 'rd.break'. To save changes and boot, just press combination keys 'Ctrl-x':
This will automatically take you to a console with restricted commands and will mount the root partition to /sysroot. To be able to do changes to any files in root partition we need to remount the partition with read/write permissions:
Now - in order to be able to access a console with a few more commands that will allow us to recover the default 'root / toor' password - we need to issue below command:
You can verify the encrypted 'root / toor' password executing a grep command on file /etc/shadow:
At this point we can issue command 'usermod -p wkXzMSj3uIviw <username>' to reset 'root' or 'toor' password to the default one (logapp). After running the command the encrypted password in /etc/shadow configuration file should look like:
We are ready now to reboot the server and login to the root console to change the default password to another more secure:
