Description
How does the license manager know if the application is still in use or what features are still checked out? When does the client/workstation communicate if the license service?
Environment
Windows operating systems only. Concurrent and Enterprise installs only.
Resolution
Statistica licensing happens in real-time. When Statistica is launched, the APPS feature or license is checked out immediately and displayed accurately in the Concurrent License Manager. See What is the Statistica Concurrent License Manager? Other licenses are are checked out when the feature is requested, e.g. the VTRX feature is checked out when the General Classification/Regression Tree Models is requested.
There is a 'heartbeat' that is sent out every 30 seconds, for versions 8.0 through 12.0, every minute from the client/workstation to the license server. The heartbeat checks so that if Statistica has crashed or the client/workstation has been disconnected from the network, where the heartbeat no longer communicates with the license server, then the licenses are returned to the licensing pool.
Under normal operation, Statistica will return the licenses immediately on shutdown.
License Borrowing Feature
During a license server upgrade, there is concern about the affect of loosing functionality on Statistica clients. To help with this, customers may borrow or check-out features before the license server is upgraded. Please see Borrowing Licenses.
